Characteristics: Small, non-vascular plants belonging to the Marchantiophyta division, closely related to mosses. They are among the oldest land plants, with some species dating back over 400 million years. Liverworts have a flattened, thalloid (ribbon-like) or leafy structure and reproduce via spores. They lack true roots, stems, or leaves, instead having simplified structures called rhizoids for attachment. Some species are aquatic or semi-aquatic.

Typical Habitats: Found in moist, shaded environments worldwide - on damp soil, rocks, tree bark, and in wetlands. They thrive in high-humidity environments and are often found near water sources. Some species are fully aquatic, growing submerged in freshwater streams and ponds. They can survive periods of desiccation and rehydrate when moisture returns.

Care Requirements: Require very high humidity (70-90%), consistent moisture, indirect or low light, and good air circulation. They prefer acidic substrates and benefit from regular misting. Aquatic species require clean, well-oxygenated water. Liverworts are sensitive to dry conditions and direct sunlight. They can be attached to various surfaces including rocks, wood, and soil.

Vivarium Suitability: Excellent for terrariums (especially closed terrariums), paludariums (terrestrial and semi-aquatic species), ripariums (marginal species), and aquariums (aquatic species like Riccia fluitans). Not suitable for desertariums or typical house plant conditions due to extremely high humidity requirements.
